Why does microfinance matter? Because finance matters when it makes something possible that otherwise might not happen.
Day one of MicroBalkans 26 in Skopje brought this question to the centre of the discussion through the panel “Why We Matter: The Role of Non-Bank Lending in the Western Balkans,” moderated by Elma Zukić, President of AMFI BiH.
Together with Gabriele Giuglietti (Banca Etica/Cresud), Visar Perani (IFC), Milena Haneš (Mikrofin) and Aleksandar Iljov (Halkbank AD Skopje), the discussion explored who microfinance serves today, how clients can grow from microbusinesses to SMEs, the relationship between banks and non-bank lenders, and the growing importance of responsible finance, measurable impact and green finance.
Microfinance has changed significantly over the past 30 years — from simple small loans to digital solutions, ESG, green finance and new technologies. But one thing has not changed: the client must remain at the centre.
Because our clients may be micro, but their ambitions are not.
